LoL Spell Power

You know that baby druid that I started the first week I started this blog?  The goal was to play her casually and level her up with friends.  That actually sort of worked until she hit 71 and my leveling friend quit playing :(  That was back at halloween.  Then she just sort of sat there doing nothing but collecting dust.  But, becoming somewhat bored of raiding on my main I resumed interest in her and she hit 80 last week.

Now I’m in the process of gearing up this new tree.  Actually it’s not going too badly considering I don’t have the endurance to really badge grind, and with all the raiding on my main I don’t get to raid much on the new tree.

Anyway, to the subject.  If you’re a new tree and you want to put out numbers, dear god don’t stack spell power.  Please, just don’t.  What you need to focus on is hate and regen.  Gem spirit, gem haste… spellpower is absolutely useless when you’re OOM.

Rule #1 of being a good tree: Always be casting!  From the 10 seconds before the pull till the boss dies, you should never stop casting in any fight.  Now, if you aren’t able to do that because of mana, then you need to fix your problem. SPIRIT my friends. Its great when you’re geared, but its godly when you’re not.

LoL Min Maxing:  I have an issue with this term being used for healers… more spell power does not = more healing.  Yes, for damage that may be true, but it’s not true for us.  Hell half of it is just going to over healing anyway.  Healers have to be more balanced than that.  Regen, haste, mana pool, spell power… all important.  I understand if you DPS on your main it’s hard to wrap your head around the idea of having balanced stats.  I know that in a lot of fights when things go your way, you can do fine will all SP.  But on the really hard fights or  when things mess up and you are recovering, that sort of thing… trust me on this one, you don’t wanna be THAT tree who is now useless. I’d Brez but I don’t have mana, can I borrow someone else’s innervate? If you’re that tree, I don’t like you.

LoL Gear score:  The same person playing the same character on the same fights in the same raid will do better with better gear.  As someone who started ICC with a 3500 GS and still out healed the others, I rather think GS is retarded.  They probably sucked.  But hey, you can’t tell they suck from GS, nor can you tell I don’t.  Please, don’t be a GS Nazi, I don’t like them either.  You can always kick people later muhahaha.  In my experience an under-geared alt of a good player will pwn an geared main of a bad player any day, be it in dps, healing or tanking.

Happy Tree-ing :)

i’d say Spirit is the most important when gearing, running out of fuel is never good :) and as for the spellpower bit. Restoration Druids = King of overhealing

  2. Hey Angela!
Loved the post! I cant agree more… even though i dont have all of the experience that you do, in that my tree only dinged 80 a lil over a week ago… I took some of your advice that you posted around gearing, gemming, and talents… Ive gone with a CF talented tree, matching sockets for the bonusses and I must say I have well-rounded stats and a powerful tree. As I started trying to raid in PUGs (as my guild has been in a little chaos lately, but getting back into the raiding ranks)… I cant tell you how many un-invites I got because of my GS (now I dont have that problem) only to end up running with them and really outhealing the other healers. While my SP may not be as high as they are; I can, with balanced stats, at least hang….

  3. I hate gearscore and I hate recount. They both encourage the wrong sort of mentality.

  4. I just finished leveling my second druid as well and noticed the exact same thing. I also noticed I hit the haste soft cap so fast it wasn’t even funny. My spell power is indeed low, atm, but in heroics I’m not even noticing.

I completely agree; give me a good player in poor gear over a well geared player who can’t play worth a damn any day. I only use gear score in pugs to get a general idea of what I’m in for before the run starts. People always surprise me – for the good and the bad.

  6. These are some great points I hadn’t thought of. I’m currently leveling a tree (who’s 61 and my highest level heals). I admit I’ve been favoring SP. It’s good to know this stuff before she was 80 and I geared her wrong.

  7. I kind of miss playing casual cows :-p (shh don’t tell my husband I said that!) My account is on (Dylan uses it) but I don’t have WoW on my new computer… been avoiding the install process so it doesn’t distract me.
